Background

The process of securing a place on the National Register was a truly collaborative effort involving Head of Archives, Meghan Fahey, the Board of Trustees, and the Amesbury Historical Commission. Heritage Consulting Group generously selected the Amesbury Public Library as recipient of their annual “Giving Back” program. Each year the firm selects an organization to receive application preparation and submission pro-bono. APL was the 2023 recipient. Their shared commitment to preservation, paired with a recent Conditions Assessment and Facilities Master Plan, underscored the Library’s historic significance and the community’s dedication to safeguarding its future.

About the National Register of Historic Places

The National Register of Historic Places serves as the United States’ official federal list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects recognized for their historical, architectural or cultural importance. Being listed on the Register brings public recognition and heightened awareness to these significant properties and also helps facilitate access to vital preservation funding, support and resources, ensuring their protection for future generations.

Looking Ahead

The Amesbury Public Library’s inclusion on the National Register of Historic Places marks an exciting new chapter in its story. Welcoming an average of 60,000 visitors each year with more than 5,300 active library cardholders, the Library remains committed to serving the diverse needs of Amesbury residents while protecting its unique historic legacy.

This listing does not place restrictions on future building renovation plans unless federal funds are being used for the project. If federal funds are used for a renovation project it does not prevent renovation or modification it simply requires that there is a review of the proposed design to ensure that the project meets the department of the interior standards for treatment of historic properties.
