Get a Library Card

The Amesbury Public Library is part of the Merrimack Valley Library Consortium (MVLC), a network of 36 public libraries located throughout northern Essex County and eastern Middlesex County. You can use your Amesbury library card at any of these libraries, giving you easy access to millions of items! See the list of member libraries.

Any Amesbury resident is eligible to get an Amesbury library card. City of Amesbury employees, property owners, and Amesbury-based businesses may also be eligible for a card. (See our Library Card & Borrowing FAQs for more info.) We have two options for cards:

  • physical cards, issued in person at the library, that grant access to all library materials, both physical and digital
  • eCards, issued instantly online, which also grant access to all library materials, both physical and digital

Get a Physical Library Card

To get a physical library card, visit the library during open hours with one of the options listed. Electronic versions visible on a phone are acceptable for bills/statements used as proof of address.

  • Photo ID (such as driver's license) with current Amesbury address on it (not written on)
  • Lease/rental agreement or mortgage paperwork with your name and current Amesbury address on it and photo ID
  • Mail (bill, bank statement, or magazine subscription--not a package) addressed to you at your current address and photo ID
  • Checkbook with current Amesbury address and photo ID

Do you go by a different name than what's on your proof of residence? While we need to record your legal name, we have a preferred name field that we are happy to use so we can address you by the correct name.

Children aged 13 and under need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian who will need to show proof of Amesbury residence. Alternatively, children may bring a printed library card application signed by their parent or legal guardian.

If you are not able to come to the library in person to apply, you can register for an e-card or call or email Circulation for assistance.

To Renew an Expired Library Card

Library cards have renewal dates so we can make sure we still have your correct information and that you are still eligible for a library card. Most cards require renewal every three years. Once renewed, you can continue using your same card. To renew your card, either visit the library in person with proof of residency OR if your legal name and address are still the same, you may use MVLC's online card renewal form.
