Shelf Help Program (for Adults)

About the Shelf Help Program

Are you an adult looking for an easy way to give back to the library? Check out Amesbury Public Library’s Shelf Help volunteer program!

Here’s how it works:

  1. Fill out the form below. Library staff will be in touch about availability!
  2. Attend an orientation session at the library.
  3. Select an available aisle of materials to keep neat and in order.
    • Lift items off the shelf, dust the shelf (using supplies provided by the library), and place items back in order.
    • Visually scan spine labels to ensure items are not mis-shelved, replacing mis-shelved items where they belong (if on that shelf) or giving them to staff (if they belong somewhere else).
    • Make sure items are secured snugly on the shelf by the bookend, with no mid-shelf gaps, but without over-crowding.
    • Make sure items are flush with the front face of the shelf.
    • Shift a few items from shelf to shelf as needed to ease overcrowding. If major shifting is needed, alert library staff.
  4. Volunteer on your own schedule, whenever the library is open! Sign in and out so we know how long you were here. If you’re no longer able to keep this commitment, just let us know, and we’ll make that aisle available to someone else.
